Are you heading north during the coziest time of the year? Well, here are some of my favorite early winter activities to get you in the seasonal mood!
Winterers Gathering, November 18-20, 2022
This gem of a festival brings so much energy to an otherwise slow time of year. There is always a fantastic line-up of speakers, films, classes, and demos. Our family loves the community meals and contra dance!
Holiday Market at North Shore Winery, November 25, 12:30-5:00pm
Can you think of a better place to spend Black Friday than on the north shore sipping local wine while supporting local makers? I think not! I'm always a huge fan of North Shore Winery, but they especially do winter well. They have mulled wine, big campfires, and (our son's favorite) big snow piles for climbing!
Oh Ole Night Parade, November 25, 5:30pm
This is a quintessential small town parade with tree lighting and fireworks! It's definitely a blink-and-you'll-miss-it parade, but it has a lot of enthusiasm. The fireworks are delightful - especially for young kids who don't get to stay up late enough for summer fireworks! This year, rumor has it that World's Best Donuts will be slinging hot skizzles (if you're not sure what those are, they are pure fried deliciousness).
Local Artists' Market at Superior Creamery, December 11, 10am-4pm
Join me and 5 other local artists at a holiday pop-up here in downtown Grand Marais. Our hosts, Superior Creamery, will offer a special menu for the day!
Winter Solstice Shadow Puppet, December 21
Grand Marais celebrates the solstices, and does it well! The winter solstice pageant is a community effort with participants of all ages.

Illuminated Ski Trails at Pincushion
With the sun setting earlier, you can still enjoy an evening ski! A few of the trails are illuminated at night. The illuminated trails are family friendly too! Make sure you have your annual ski pass before you head out.
Hike, snowshoe, or ski at George Washington Pines
Don't have a ski pass? Or maybe you have adventure buddies who don't ski? George Washington Pines is my favorite family-friendly (and pet-friendly) spot for a ski, snowshoe, sled ride, or winter hike. The loop is a little long for young kids, but the nice thing about the trail is that it is unpretentious, so backtracking is acceptable!
